In 1771 he married Lydia Mary Osborne, who died within two years of the marriage and by whom he had a son William. He later had two illegitimate children who were provided for by trust. He was a commissioner of excise, governor of Christ's Hospital, the Foundling Hospital and the Westminster Infirmary, and was, according to Gibbs, a 'man of letters'. He also acted as captain in the Bucks militia.
