Charming diminutive ‘Essex Crystal’ (reverse painted intaglio)pendant of a tiny terrier, probably a Cairn but very like a Yorkshire terrier. c.1880.

Set to a high carat gold frame 1/2 inch across.

'Essex crystals' as they are commonly known(a misnomer relating to William Essex,noted painted in enamels at the same time) in fact originated in Belgium in the 1860s attributed to an artist named Emile Marius Pradier.
