Two Stopford family 15 carat mourning locket pendants suspended from an unusual snake split ring,one 1823 and one 1846.
The larger of the two lockets is engraved to the exterior MC for Mary Stopford, Countess of Courtown (1769–1823),. Engraved to the interior with her dates and again her coronet, and inscription ‘hair of a beloved mother’.
Formerly Lady Mary Scott-Montagu and noted for her beauty she was painted by George Romney 1793.
The smaller locket is engraved to both sides with the Courtown family symbol of a ‘Wyvern’ a heraldic dragon-like beast. To the interior are engraved initials RS and CS for Admiral Hon Sir Robert Stopford(1768-1846) and his daughter Christiana Fanshawe Stopford(1846-1855).
Larger locket 2cms diameter, smaller locket 1.75cms. Diameter of split ring 1.5cms.
