Exceptional enamel and 18 carat gold pendant bearing the emblems of the Spanish Inquisition c.1780.
The central cross symbolises the hope of repentance, and is flanked by the olive of reconciliation and the sword of punishment. The reverse has beautiful chased decoration and an enamelled black and white cross for the Roman Catholic Dominican Order.
The gold work and the enamel is exceptional quality. The emblems are bordered by vivid green enamel sprigs against a cobalt scalloped design and white enamel border.The surmount is formed of Rococo C-scrolls and carved roses.

The Spanish Inquisition was established in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms. The Inquisition was abolished in 1834, during the reign of Isabella II.
