Whimsical set of shakudo dress studs depicting scenes of anthropomorphic frog life c.1870.

Mounted in 15ct gold.

Collar stud(1) 8mm across

Small studs(3) 12mm across

Large studs(2) 2.5cms.

Could easily be converted to earrings or mounted as pendants or even rings.

Shakudo work, the inlaying of gold, silver and copper, together with a range of coloured alloys, into a dark metal base was perfected by Japanese craftsmen .The technique was originally developed by the Samurai sword-makers for the decoration of the sword-mounts and guards. Other pieces were marketed in the West as highly fashionable curiosities in the second half of the c19th.
