Georgian scallop shell scent bottle carved in chalcedony with 18ct gold fittings c.1820.
Bottle 4 cms, with bale 6cms.
Fluted chalcedony with textured gold cap and finely woven bale. Lacks stopper.
Most often seen in cornelian, agate or chalcedony and occasionally other stones.
These tiny perfume pendants were useful as vinaigrettes or pomanders, containing precious oils which could be inhaled when desired in the not always pleasant-smelling atmosphere of Georgian society.
