Expressive c18th hardstone cameo ring portraying a satyr mask bordered by rose cut diamonds c.1770. The cameo is likely to have been after a Roman sculpture mask several of which can be found in Museum collections and would have been widely studied as part of the c18th Grand Tour in Rome. The horns can be seen at the top of the mask, protruding through the flowing hair.

A simple split shoulder fine 15 carat shank, the bezel just under half and inch across.

Size 5.75. Condition of cameo perfect, a few of the diamonds would appear to be replacements.

In Greek mythology satyrs were wild half-animal forest dwellers, intelligent and mischievous, followers of Dionysus, the God of Wine. Silenus and Marsyas are the most notable satyrs depicted in art.
