Glowing carnelian Roman intaglio depicting an eagle feasting upon the prey of a dog, circa 1st century, set to a solid 22 carat Roman-style ring.

The gold has a wonderfully tactile and burnished surface and is stamped 22ct.

The subject is close to one I have located in James Tassie’s collection which is the cast of a gem in Charles Townley’s collection.

A fine example of a good colour ancient intaglio of an exhuberant subject.

9.2 grams.
