Stunning late c18th century agate cameo ring depicting the head of a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty in profile to the left. Cameo Italian c.1790.
The mount is sympathetic in 22 carat, closed back,Roman style setting.
Size 8. 20.5 grams.
The subject’s classicized facial features and tousled hair are characteristic of the art made during the reign of the emperor Augustus.
The specific arrangement of locks along the hairline and the long sideburns are found in a number of portraits, which are replicas of the same type previously believed to depict Germanicus (the father of Caligula), but more likely representing Nero Caesar (AD 6-31), Germanicus' oldest son and brother of Caligula.
