The unknown sitter wears a blue gown and grey powdered hair with ostrich plumes in her hat.
The miniature is set to it’s original gold frame with later brooch pin.
A small catalogue label survives on the back of frame.
4.5 cms by 3.5 cms.
Largely self-educated, Samuel Shelley was a leading miniaturist ranking with Cosway, Smart, and Crosse. His watercolours and miniatures were engraved by Bartolozzi, William Nutter, and Caroline Watson.
