Seventeenth century portrait of a gentleman using graphite on card by the master draughtsman David Paton.(Scottish artist, active 1660-1700).
Gilt metal 17th century pendant frame. 6cms by 4.5cms.
Paton worked mainly in plumbago,pencil and sepia.
Fine graphite 'plumbago' drawings either on vellum or card were highly prized and finessed by a group of artists of the 17th and earlier 18th centuries and their works are a fascinating area of study. In 1668 Paton drew a portrait of King Charles II in Scotland using ink on vellum.The portrait survives in Ham House. Works by Paton can be found in the V and A collection,National Gallery Scotland,Ham House, and the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch.
