Elegant late c18th navette mourning ring with a border of deep blue enamel and plain sheet of opaline under glass.

The opaline would have originally featured an initial in seed pearl which has at some point been removed.

To reverse inscribed J.Pocock Ob.22 Dec 1787 aet.69.

Beautifully constructed 15 carat bezel and shank that feels like silk on the skin.

From my personal collection of very plain c18th navette rings.

Size 8. Length of navette 3.2cms.

Opaline glass was first produced in Murano in the c17th but most popular in France from the late c18th to imitate the look of porcelain and semi-precious opal gemstones. It is characterized by its milky, opaque appearance, often with a translucent or iridescent quality when held to the light.
