Unusual link silver and niello chain with large chequerboard niello bolt ring c.1890.
The chain resembles flattened barley twist segments and silver curb sections and terminates in a niello dog clip so the chain can be worn short with the bolt ring section as a drop or as a longer chain.
Some wear to the niello work commensurate with age.

Niello is a black, sulfide alloy used to fill engraved, chased, or etched designs on silver.It was popular during the late  Victorian era for its rich, decorative contrast.
