Highly unusual Neoclassical three layered shell cameo gold brooch c.1830.

The pale white ground of the shell cleverly forms the backdrop to a pink layer used for clothing and drapery and a brown layer for the chariot and one of the horses.Cupids fly ahead of the chariot and behind.

The shape of the cameo points to it having been worn in the hair as a diadem or comb, a popular fashion of the late Georgian period.

2.2 by 1.1 inches.

An extraordinary example of the cameo carver’s art from the early c19th.
