Stunning large scale mourning navette pendant featuring a silhouette of a fashionable gentleman sporting a ribbon-tied pigtail and frilled chemise.c.1780. 2inches by 1.5inches.
The silhouette is attributable to John Miers(1758-1821)probably the most celebrated British silhouettist of the late c18th. The central panel is surrounded by an intricately pierced and chased gold cartouche with garland and palm fronds,sewn skillfully onto a hair ground.
The reverse has a small navette with the typical memorial legend 'Forgive the wish that would have kept thee here'.
The gold frame is chased with bright-cut decoration and unusually has loops at both terminals, possibly to be sewn into clothing.
Condition totally original and untouched.
