Unusual micromosaic earrings depicting Ancient Roman theatre masks set to high-carat gold frames suspended from fine chains and simple later 15ct gold ball tops.c.1830.
The tiny tesserae are the work of a master mosaic workshop.
Such masks which would have been well known to Grand Tourists visiting Pompeii in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Ancient Greek and Roman theatre such masks represented stock characters in an exaggerated way,the comedic mask for instance with a giant smile.
The frames are decorated with a Vitruvian scroll with traces of black enamel.
The discs measure almost 3/4 inches across.Full length 1 .5 inches.
Condition very fine and clean,wear to enamel scroll.Ball tops stamped 15ct.
