Portrait miniature of a young aristocratic lady wearing sumptuous jewellery signed and dated Gustavus Hamilton 1764.

The fashionable sitter wears an ermine trimmed robe, and a parure of sapphires and pearls, a multiple tiered necklace with girandoles of sapphires and diamonds, a diamond pom-pom aigrette set with blue feathers.

The miniature is set to a flat-cut garnet and gold bracelet clasp.The tongue of the clasp has the option to wear as a pendant.

1.5 by 1.25 inches.

Gustavus Hamilton was an Irish miniaturist 1739-1775.

He was an apprentice to Samuel Dixon.

Hamilton exhibited his miniatures between 1765 and 1773 at the Society of Artists in Ireland in Dublin.

His work is often of particularly small scale to be worn as jewellery, and his portrait faces are often of a bluish tone.
