Charming Rococo period 'giardinetti' (little garden) ring c.1760, representing four blooms growing from a flowerpot.
Set with four rose diamonds and two garnets, all original stones and settings, the high carat gold plain shank is a later(19th century)replacement.
Small chip to one garnet. Size 7.
Giardinetti styles originated in the Rococo with it's fondness for naturalistic motifs and light, curved asymetric ornamentation. These 'giardinetti' rings were so well loved they were reinterpreted throughout the 19th and even into the 20th century with Art Nouveau and the Art Deco. The original 18th century rings have such fragility that very few genuine examples survive.
The design book by Jean-Henri-Prosper Pouget published 1762 Traité des Pierres Précieuses is an important reference.
