Delicious wine coloured foiled smoky quartz pendant earring drops in cut down gold settings c.1820. The tops are antique gold hinged front to back fittings.

Such an unusual colour is possibly in imitation of wine coloured tourmalines, a stone rarely seen at the time and largely misclassified until the late 19th century. In England in the 18th and 19th centuries the names 'shorl', 'schorl' and 'shirl' were used to describe these stones.

Drops 3/4 inch long,full earring1.5inches. One drop has a tiny chip at 7 o'clock.
