Delightful moss agate and high carat gold Georgian butterfly brooch c.1820.
The translucent dentritic agates are carefully selected to reveal green, orange and burgundy 'mossy' inclusions to imitate the beauty of butterfly wings.
This particularly fine specimen measures a diminutive 3 cms by 2 cms.
The Geological Society of London was founded on November 13, 1807, about the middle of 'The Heroic Age of Geology,' a period described by the famous paleontologist Zittel to extend from 1790 to 1820. The fashion for decorative agate jewels reflected this fascination, agates were often sourced from Ida-Oberstein in Germany and cut and set in England.
