Intriguing Georgian 15 carat gold and cornelian fob seal c.1820, the intaglio depicting a goat sitting in the shade of cypress tree..with a Latin inscription “Praeter Invisam Cupressum Nulla’ which translates as “Except the unvisited cypress tree”.I believe this to be a line by the Ancient Roman lyric poet Horace but if there are any Classics scholars out there who can shed some light on the meaning intended please message me.
Excellent condition, a letter N has been very faintly etched to the left of the cypress, likely relating to a previous owner.
The fob could easily be worn as a ring(size 5).
