Unusual early Victorian Creole gold hoop earrings with locket backs c.1840.
The gold work is profusely engraved with floral motifs and beautifully lightweight to wear.
Remarkably clean,untouched condition.
Yellow gold colour, tests higher than 9 carat but lower than 15 carat.
Rare to find such a pristine example and I have never seen another pair with long curved ‘locket backs’.
2 cms by 2.5cms.
Creole earrings became fashionable in the early Victorian era due to the influence of Creole culture from the Caribbean and New Orleans, which itself was a fusion of African, Caribbean, and European styles. These earrings were a distinctly bold, tapered hoop style that contrasted with the more delicate, romantic and naturalistic motifs.
