Exceptional portrait miniature by Nathaniel Hone(1718-1784) identified as the celebrated actor and playwright David Garrick(1717-1779).
The miniature is signed NH and dated 1763. Garrick wears a mauve jacket and red waistcoat, and white stock. Set to a gold clasp framed by a with a ribbon border of foiled flat-cut garnets set in gold, later coverted to a pendant. 1.5inches by 1.5 inches.
Vertical scratch to centre of glass. Some replacement stones to frame.
Nathaniel Hone RA was an Irish-born portrait and miniature painter, and one of the founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768.
David Garrick was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of European theatrical practice throughout the 18th century, and was a pupil and friend of Samuel Johnson.He had a lavish public funeral at Westminster Abbey and was laid to rest in Poet's Corner.
