The relief is highly polished, the ground agate is finely speckled transculent material.

Cleopatra became a popular cameo subject in Italy in the 16th and 17th centuries often with fashionable contemporary hairstyles. This particular example correlates to an engraving published in 1715 by Pieter Bodart.
