15 carat bloodstone intaglio pendant depicting an Indian elephant c.1830.
The setting is a scalloped cartouche with a foliate chased bale.
Beneath the finely carved elephant is an inscription in Sinhalese, an Indo-Aryan language, one of the two languages of Sri Lanka, written in a distinctive ‘Brahmic script’ which I believe here translates as Ceylon.
Total length 2.5cms, 1.4 cms wide.
