Poignant Berlin Iron bracelet clasp set in gold dated 1825.
Unusual to find any piece of Berlin with a date, the reverse of the clasp bears the inscription ‘Notre angel est au ciel ,
Le 19 Novembre 1825’ Our Angel is in Heaven. The iron cameo features a winged cherub riding a spaniel. It is possible the clasp is a mourning gift relating to a much loved child or perhaps a pet.
The clasp would be sewn to a black silk or velvet ribbon.
Iron and 9ct gold.
Cameo 1.4cm by 1cm.
For an extensive catalogue of cast cameos see European Cast Iron in the Birmingham Museum of Art by Anne Forschler-Tarrasch.(2009),however this particular cameo is unrecorded.
