Fine Bull’s Mouth shell cameo depicting the rather rare subject of Ariel on a Bat from Shakespeare’s The Tempest c.1840.
Set in original 15 carat gold frame.
The wings of the bat are masterfully sculpted, the magical Ariel himself has fine gauzy butterfly wings and a peacock feather behind.
The subject had become particularly popular in the early c19th with paintings by Johan Heinrich Fuseli, Henry Singleton and Joseph Severn. A fine copy of Severn’s composition in shell can be seen in the V and A collection.
