Exquisite Archeological Revival 15 carat gold amphora c.1860.

Attributable to Phillips of Cockspur Street.

Urn 1.25 inches, with chain and bale 2.25 inches.

The amphora pendant has finely applied granulated gold work and rope twists so characteristic of the style, the urn itself clearly a design inspired by antiquity.

Though Castellani in Rome is always cited as the leader in producing the finest pieces there were a few London workshops who equalled the high quality of the fashion.

Robert Adam Phillips and his brother Magnus Albert Phillips opened a retail jewellers prior to 1839, trading as Phillips Brothers at 31 Cockspur Street, London.

Robert Phillips was a contemporary and acquaintance to both Fortunato Pio Castellani and Carlo Giuliano and became one of the most prominent and renowned manufacturing jewellers in London working predominantly in the revivalist style.
