Watercolour portait miniature depicting the personification 'An Eclipse' by artist Thomas Harper. The partially veiled head nestles in clouds,a slither of moon beyond and a star at her side in the night's sky. This artwork is the original for one in a series of mezzotints printed by George Maile in 1820.Comet and Luna were also printed alongside but others,'A Mist',Night','Day','Psyche' printed later in the 1820s and 1830s followed the same style of an idealised beauty floating in the skies.
The miniature set to a gilt pendant frame with cobalt glass to reverse.Pendant 2 1/2 inches across,with bale 3 inches in length.
Thomas Harper was active as a portrait artist and miniature painter in Brighton during the 1820s listed as a "Profilist" at 13c North Street, Brighton. He exhibited his portraits at the Royal Academy between 1817 and 1843.Harper was particularly known for his portraits of actors and actresses. Between 1825 and 1829, he produced a series of painted portraits entitled "Brighton Beauties" which were later issued as mezzotint prints by Huffam and Thompson.
