Fine shell cameo of Alexander the Great in 15 carat gold frame c.1830.
The frame originally had a dual purpose as a bracelet clasp but also has a brooch fitting.
2 inches by 1.5 inches. Horned Helmet shell.
Alexander the Great(356-323 BC) is shown with the “Horns of Ammon” which symbolize Alexander’s claim that he was the son of the Egyptian god Ammon, a claim reportedly confirmed by the oracle at the sanctuary of Zeus-Ammon at Siwa, Egypt. He is also here depicted as Helios,God of the Sun,sitting amongst the clouds.Opium poppy seed heads are also depicted in reference to Alexander the Great fondness for the narcotic benefits of the drug,he is credited with introducing it throughout his vast Empire, from Eastern Europe to India.
